The end of the Formula 1 season.
With only a few races left on the calendar, the 2023 Formula 1 season is almost over. But there is still plenty to look forward to. There is an exciting battle in the midfield and new races pass by.
Max Verstappen is the unthreatened world champion.
Max Verstappen completes his trilogy and is world champion. That became clear early in the season. Red Bull will be very strong in 2023.
Only teammate Sergio Pérez managed to put up a fight at the start of the season. He won the races in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan.
Max Verstappen then managed to win 10 races in a row. With Pérez’s many mistakes, it was not an exciting championship.
Yet Max’s performance is at an unprecedented level. What is his challenge now? Some records. He can still go for the most wins in a season, the highest percentage of wins, and the most points in a season.
The battle for second and third place.
Behind Max’s championship, there is still plenty to fight for. Second place, for example. This is currently still in the hands of Sergio Pérez, but the competition is not standing still.
Mercedes has been competing better and better in recent races. Lewis Hamilton is still just over 30 points behind Red Bull’s Mexican driver, but due to Pérez’s failures, that lead could simply disappear.
If Pérez does perform, the battle for third place will be interesting. Hamilton has taken over that place from Fernando Alonso.
The Spaniard had a dream start to the season, but the Aston Martin team has stalled somewhat. Apart from a good result in Zandvoort, things are not going smoothly.
The threat for third place mainly comes from behind. With a victory in Singapore, Carlos Sainz has made his calling card.
McLaren is also strong. Lando Norris is still far behind Hamilton. But with a few podiums, he is a serious contender for third place.
Constructors’ Championship was also exciting.
Behind Red Bull, the constructors’ championship is exciting. Mercedes and Ferrari seem to be fighting for second place.
But in a weekend in which McLaren takes 33 points with a double podium, they are not yet eliminated.
Aston Martin already feels McLaren’s hot breath on its neck. It seems only a matter of time before they lose their fourth place.
Alpine is in sixth place and in a kind of no man’s land. They are too far behind McLaren, which is also in top form. And with more than 60 points ahead of Williams, they no longer have to look back.
A seventh place for Williams is an achievement considering how bad the team was a few years ago. Alexander Albon often shows his talent in qualifying.
This regularly results in points in the race. Still, Haas or Alfa Romeo can come close with a few good results.
Just grab a seventh and eighth place in the race and you score 10 points. Then Williams’ lead disappears like snow in the sun.
AlphaTauri dangles at the very bottom. Red Bull’s sister team has failed to deliver a good car in 2023. Yuki Tsunoda often shows in qualifying that he can do it.
But in the race, the car simply lacks speed. Substitute Liam Lawson surprisingly took points in the Singapore GP with his ninth place. Such a result in the last games of the season is great.
Most seats are divided.
Last year’s silly season was less silly than previous years. There have been no major shifts with driver transfers. Many drivers have a contract that runs until the end of 2024.
Logan Sargeant’s spot is only open. His place at Williams is at risk due to poor performance. Liam Lawson is one of the drivers who has a chance of doing so.
